The Marvel franchise is about to usher in a whole new era of badass women for 2020, and it’s starting with Black Widow. Since the rise of the Avengers films, fans have long awaited for the origin story of Scarlett Johansson’s powerful character and following Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel film earlier this year, we now have a fresh look at the forthcoming Marvel instalment.

Spotlighting Natasha Romanoff, a Russian spy-turned-Avenger, the film will look into the character’s past before her – spoiler alert – unfortunate fate during the finale of Avenger’s: Endgame. Speculated to be set during the events of Captain America: Civil War, multiple references look to World War II as she is groomed into human ammunition.

As fans discovered overnight, the first teaser trailer has been revealed and flashes back and forward to key moments of Black Widow’s life. “I used to have nothing, and then I got this job, this family,” Johansson narrates.

Black Widow first made a debut in 2010 for Avengers and has since garnered a passionate fan base.

Joining Johansson in the cast, David Harbour will play Alexei Shostakov, also known as the Red Guardian and within the original comics, was in an arranged marriage with Romanoff. Florence Pugh will play Yelena Belova and Rachel Wiesz will front the Iron Maiden. Furthermore, it is speculated that due to the time period the film is believed to be set in, there is a possibility of an appearance from the Thunderbolts, a group of reformed super villains, comparatively to the likes of the DC Suicide Squad.
