In a new book by Omid Scobie titled Endgame, it has been revealed that the late Queen Elizabeth II offered her support to Meghan Markle as she adjusted to life in the royal palace. The book suggests that the Queen recommended Lieutenant Colonel Nana Kofi Twumasi-Ankrah, a Ghanaian-born household cavalry officer, to assist Markle in her royal duties.

According to sources, Markle and her friends found the suggestion insulting, as they believed it was due to a lack of Black or non-white staff in relevant senior roles within the palace. It is noted that Markle was initially assigned Lady Susan Hussey to help her with her royal duties but turned down the offer. As a result, the palace suggested Lieutenant Colonel Twumasi-Ankrah as a mentor.

The book also suggests that Markle’s sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, was not offered similar guidance. This revelation raises questions about the palace’s approach to assisting Markle in her new role.

The claims in Scobie’s book add to previous reports of a disconnect between Markle and the palace in terms of who was recommended to help her adjust. Author Tina Brown’s book, “The Palace Papers,” also highlighted the issue of a lack of women of colour in the roles recommended to support Markle.

Lady Susan Hussey eventually stepped down from her royal duties in 2022 after making unacceptable comments to a Black domestic abuse campaigner.

These revelations come in the wake of Markle’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which she claimed that unnamed individuals within the royal family had expressed concerns about the skin colour of her son, Archie.

Neither Kate Middleton nor Prince Charles has publicly responded to these claims, and it has been reported that Prince William and Prince Charles are considering potential legal action following an accidental Dutch misprint of Endgame, which incorrectly named them as royals accused of making racist remarks.

Discussions are ongoing, and decisions regarding potential legal action are expected to be made with care and professionalism.
