2019 has seen a huge year for Disney. Releasing live-action remakes of some of its most beloved films such as Dumbo, Aladdin and The Lion King, 2020 is set to continue trend as it sets alive nostalgia for yet another of its cartoons. First revealed in July, we got an initial taste for the next iteration of Mulannow the official trailer has revealed the magic we can expect to witness come April, next year.

Following the epic tale of a young woman who fronts a male persona to fight Northern Invaders of China, the fan-favourite, musical cartoon is seeing a rerun but unlike its predecessor, it will spotlight action and cultural references rather than the fun-loving Mushu (sorry Eddie). Dance scenes and boppy sing-alongs appear to be absent from the forthcoming film, however its captivating costuming and fight scenes will elevate expectations of viewers.

Played by Liu Yifei, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honoured warrior embarks on an epic journey to fight the Northern Invaders in order to save her father. Fronting as a man, her spirit will be tested beyond limits and the Chinese law. The cast also includes, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan and Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor.

When the family movie was first released in 1998, it was considered a progressive storyline in film – a woman fighting for herself in place of a male and ushering in Asian culture into a predominately white-washed roster of films. Just over 22 years later and the famed storyline and its themes are still important as ever.

Australian cinemas will see the anticipated release from April 2. Watch the official trailer below.
