For Formula 1 fanatics, you would recall the quick rise of Finnish-German race car driver Nico Rosberg. Hailing from Wiesbaden in Germany, the thrill seeker was shot into international stardom following his first win in 2012, at the Chinese Grand Prix. Just four years later and he would go on to take out the 2016 Formula One World Championship driving for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport. Soon after, the champion retired.

Nowadays however, the 35-year-old has switched out the racetrack for river ways and seen with wife Vivian Sibold last week, the former Formula 1 icon has become our unlikely style muse. Spotted amid the markets and floating in a boat in the Italian village of Portofino, Rosberg stepped out in classic European summer attire.

Wearing white tailored shorts – the creasing giving that laidback look – as well as a navy blue linen shirt, it wasn’t the failsafe clothing choice that caught our attention, but the cult accessories he boasted. While Rosberg appeared to be husband-of-the-year, carrying a Louis Vuitton tote for Sibold, the driver donned a black leather Dior saddlebag, and perhaps our favourite piece, a pair of Hermès sandals.

The exact style in question is the Hermès ‘Izmir’ leather sandals and while open toes on men are somewhat taboo to the conservative dresser, luxury runways from the likes of the French house are sounding the return of the look. We suggest going with a chunky iteration for a more masculine vibe, and for added luxury and cool appeal, leather never fails to look good. Just hide them from the sun unless you want a rude shock when you slide them on, only to burn your soles.
