Seems Australians aren’t as horny as we like to think we are after coming 12th in PornHub’s wonderfully insightful annual Year In Review report that looks at porn consumption across the globe.

To be fair, it’s been a pretty tough yea, what with the whole house working from home during lockdowns. It was definitely harder (lol, pun) than usual to find a spare five minutes to yourself.

Taking out top spot was, no surprises, the USA followed by the UK and then Japan.

But perhaps the most surprising detail of the report was not so much who watched, but what porn was watched.

Seems our tastes have become a little more, ahem, exotic.

According to PornHub, Australia’s most popular genre of erotic film was hentai – a Japanese style of anime and manga known for its hyper-sexualised characters and plotlines. Or in other words, sexy cartoons.

But it wasn’t just Australians enjoying a kinky ‘toon. Hentai is officially also the most globally searched porn genre of 2021.

Not to yuck someone’s yum but okie dokie.

Coming in a close second was lesbian, then some good old fashioned massage and  threesomes.

There was also a few other interesting curve balls in our private time searches.

According to PornHub, “scissoring” was a big win for us in 2021, saying that “when compared to the rest of the world, visitors from Australia are +136 percent more likely to view the Scissoring category.

Porn for women was also a hit, with Australians  “+81 percent more into the Popular With Women category”.

Couples that porn together, stay together.

According to PornHub, there has been a definite increase in searches for porn that’s informative (how to videos) and also couple-oriented.

The drop in stigma around watching porn may be contributing to this. Stereotypically a male-gaze dominated industry, there’s been a big upswing in erotica that targets women.

Speaking to PornHub about their report, sex educator and writer Dainis Graveris commented that “More and more people are looking for genuine interactions between performers and more realistic depictions of sex.

“‘Romantic’ or ‘passionate’ porn somehow feels and looks more authentic. And many people see this porn genre as an inspiration for their sexual actions and preferences because the narratives speak to them. Viewers can use these romantic scenes to not only attain sexual satisfaction but also explore their sexual identity. The content aims to break the fictional standards of porn.”
