In June, it was announced that Top Gun would finally get a sequel, more than 30 years after the first film was released. Now, with radio silence since the initial buzz we’ve received a release date along with cast and plot details. Titled Top Gun: Maverick, the film will see a launch due June 25, 2020.

Tom Cruise who is set to play Maverick teased details of the synopsis to Access Hollywood last year, and now following the release of the official trailer, it simply reads:  “Pete “Maverick” Mitchell mentors a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots.”

“It’s gonna be a competition film, like the first one,” Cruise said. “And it’s gonna be in the same vein, the same tone as the first one, but a progression for Maverick.”

While Val Kilmer will return as the previous “Iceman”, character Goose (who had died in the first film) obviously won’t return, with his late son Wrigley (played by Miles Teller) to be featured as a main character in the plot.

Actress Jennifer Connelly will replace Kelly McGillis as the films leading lady, who’s character is expected to be a new love interest for Maverick. Rounding out the cast, stars Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, and Lewis Pullman will front the big screen, as well as Jay Ellis, Bashir Salahuddin, Charles Parnell, Monica Barbaro, and Danny Ramirez, according to Deadline.

Written by Peter Craig, Justin Marks, and Eric Warren Singer, the film is directed by Only the Brave’s Joseph Kosinski. With old revivals and new faces, the new film is sure to be a hit if the newly-release trailer is anything to go by.
