Tom Cruise plays Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

In June, during the height of nostalgic film and television releases, it was announced that 1986 action blockbuster Top Gun would receive a sequel. Featuring OG star Tom Cruise, the first trailer was released soon after and now, we have a closer look at the storyline which will continue the beloved franchise. Speaking to Hollywood Reporter during the late stage of production, the actor teased, “It’s gonna be a competition film, like the first one. And it’s gonna be in the same vein, the same tone as the first one, but a progression for Maverick.” The official synopsis reads:

“After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.”

Despite a slightly weathered facade, Cruise and the original stars keep alive the film magic fans were initially drawn to. And with modern technology, the latest trailer promises even more action and adventure.

Top Gun: Maverick will also star Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Bashir Salahuddin, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Greg Tarzan Davis with Ed Harris. It is slated to drop into Australian cinemas from June 25, 2020. Tune into the trailer below.
