When the film, Don’t Worry Darling, first premiered last year at the Venice Film Festival, you might recall all the controversy that was attached with the project’s cast and director — the press tour was rife with rumours of behind-the-scenes drama between its lead actress Florence Pugh and director Olivia Wilde. But the scandal that far superseded any scuffle between cast and crew was indeed whether Harry Styles actually *spat* on Chris Pine at the film’s premier in Venice.
Dubbed ‘spit-gate’, the internet was rife with theories and conspiracies, memes and reviews over what really happened. Well, we can now put this story to bed as Chris Pine has just come out to announce that Harry Style did NOT spit on him.
Pine sat down with Esquire where the 42-year old concluded that, while it did look like Style spat on him, it was a mere inside joke the two were sharing with each other.
“Harry did not spit on me. Harry’s a very, very kind guy,” Pine said in a video accompanying an Esquire profile.
In the profile video, Pine explains that he was completely unaware of the internet swirl around ‘spit-gate’ when his publicist woke him to say that they would have to craft a statement on what happened in Venice.
“I had no idea what happened but she showed me the thing and it does indeed look like Harry’s spitting on me. He didn’t spit on me,” said Pine.
Pine went on to say that what he thinks happened was that Styles leaned in to say something like, “It’s just words, isn’t it?”, adding “We had this little joke because we’re all jet-lagged; we’re all trying to answer these questions. And sometimes when you’re doing these press things, your brain goes befuddled and you start speaking gibberish. But it’s just words, man.”
Besides addressing the internet’s burning questions, Pine also discussed in the profile the plethora of memes that were made of him during the press tour of Don’t Worry Darling.
“Sometimes the question’s not that interesting,” he said, “and you just fucking zone out, and you’re looking at a ceiling because it’s really pretty.” “All the memes I saw about my face in Venice made me fucking laugh,” he added. And if you haven’t seen Chris Pine reacting to the internet’s memes of him in Venice, do yourself a favour.
