The 2019 release of the Joker was huge. Along with raving reviews on the performance of lead, Joaquin Phoenix, it also grossed just over $1 billion USD at the global box office. And while the Arthur Fleck actor initially believed the film should remain a standalone, new reports suggest a trilogy is on the way. Cue the psychotic laugh.
Warner Bros. is actively in negotiations with Phoenix and is said to be offering $50 million USD (or approximately $68.4 million AUD) for the 45 year old to front Arthur Fleck once again as well as writing scripts. In addition, the studio is looking to make the two films in four years – one out in 2022 and another in 2024.
“They plan to make two sequels in the next four years, with a long-term commitment to Joaquin and his Joker director Todd Phillips and producer Bradley Cooper,” the source told a reporter. “It’s all about getting Joaquin to accept the terms – and the biggest payday of his career by far.”
The role scored Phoenix an Oscar for Best Actor. Stay tuned for further developments.
