If there’s one thing that Pharrell Williams is going to do while employed at Louis Vuitton, it’s call in a friend. This time, the rapper turned menswear creative director for one of the biggest fashion houses in the world has tapped fellow musician-slash designer, Tyler The Creator, to develop its Spring 2024 Men’s Capsule Collection.
Williams heralded Tyler’s entrance into the Louis Vuitton universe as an extension of the maison’s philosophy. “Tyler has been my close friend and collaborator for years and we’ve always connected on music and design. This collaboration is unique to Louis Vuitton because it’s a natural extension of our LVERS philosophy, building on our network of incredible artists and creatives. There are so many elements specific to Tyler built into these pieces and it’s been inspiring to see him hone in on his craft and collaborate with him for this Spring collection,” said Williams in an official statement of the collab.
The collection itself is a vibrant testament to Tyler’s distinctive style and Louis Vuitton’s unmatched craftsmanship. At the heart is the “Craggy Monogram,” Tyler’s fresh take on the iconic Louis Vuitton pattern, peppered with playful motifs of daisies and Airedale Terriers. This emblematic design traverses a spectrum of clothing and accessories, from a sumptuous chocolate down jacket to a sleek vanilla windbreaker, embodying a blend of sophistication and whimsical charm.
Tyler’s approach to the collaboration was deeply personal, aiming to create pieces that resonate with his day-to-day style. “My main focus was making things I would wear all the time. I dress the same in a meeting as I do a performance or grocery store trip, so hand drawing the monogram felt like the perfect balance to me. The chessboard is one of the greatest things I’ve made and is definitely my favourite thing from the collection. The team was great to work with, it kinda felt like ‘Big’ with Tom Hanks. P has always left a door open for me, but I still can’t believe this one,” Tyler shares, capturing his enthusiasm and genuine surprise at the opportunity to bring his vision to life within the storied walls of Louis Vuitton.
Spanning 17 looks, the collection showcases Tyler’s irreverent take on preppy style, integrating his love for pastels, tailored shorts, and unique accessories that speak to his personal obsessions. From the whimsically designed travel chessboard to the monogram cereal bowl, each piece tells a story of creativity, collaboration, and the seamless blending of two worlds. This Spring 2024 Men’s Capsule Collection not only celebrates the creative synergy between Tyler, The Creator and Louis Vuitton but also sets a new benchmark for collaborative luxury fashion, inviting wearers into a world where artistry and high fashion converge.
