Premier football club Real Madrid is looking to be not only one of the best football clubs in the world but also the best dressed after it was announced that Zegna would become the official luxury travel wear designers.
In their own words, “because every king needs a tailor”.
The Italian brand’s work will (for now) focus on travel wear, or the off-field garments that players will wear while on the road and first look at the creations will occur at their first away game during the Champions League of the 2022/2023 season.
While some might ask why an Italian brand has chosen to dress a Spanish football team, it would perhaps make more sense to think bigger than borders. According to Zegna, the decision to cloth one of the most valuable football clubs in the world was shared sense of time. With histories spanning back over a century, both Zegna and Real Madrid are rooted in heritage. It’s also a shared sense of perfection and performance in their respective arts.
This is yet another brick in a new road for Zegna since undergoing its rebrand and releasing a revitalised new identity. Zegna clothing, as separate to the parent company Ermenegildo Zegna since the brand went public in 2021, underwent a streamlining of its three primary categories – its sport-inspired Z Zegna, the tailoring arm of Ermenegildo Zegna and the XXX couture collection – based on what they describe as the new fluidity of living.
Under the guidance of artistic director Alessandro Sartori, Zegna’s been able to integrate the multitudes of wardrobe demands into collections that combine the loose, relaxed silhouettes of casual codes; technical fabrics seamlessly blending with superfine merino; and athletic detailing on elegant, tailored fits.
