We’ve definitely hit peak 90s nostalgia when one of the funniest sketches to appear on comedy show Saturday Night Live is a live action scene of Beavis and Butthead lookalikes starring Ken himself, Ryan Gosling and SNL cast member Mikey Day.

Gosling has had a long history of being one of the better SNL guest hosts, not just because of his genuine comedy chops but also for his complete inability to not break character during a sketch. His alien abduction series with the incredible Kate McKinnon? The cracks are showing within seconds of McKinnon starting her lines.

It’s practically tradition. But rarely does he make seasoned SNL members crack like he and Day managed to do this time.

The scene kicked off with a mock NewsNation panel on artificial intelligence that also starred Kenan Thompson as an unflappable AI expert. During the sketch, with Heidi Gardner playing host and moderator, Keenan spots someone in the crowd who’s the spitting image of Beavis–aka Gosling–rocking the iconic blonde pompadour and blue rock-shirt with prosthetic nose.

According to some sources, Gardner was completely unaware of what she was going to see when she turned around to address Gosling’s character. And it shows.

Things got even better when Day, decked out as Butt-Head complete with gummy prosthetics and all, thanks to the genius makeup artist Louie Zakarian, replaced Gosling in the same seat behind Gardner. This time, Gardner completely broke character and for a good minute couldn’t even look at her colleague.

Kudos to the rest of the crowd in the scene who managed to maintain a straight face the entire sketch. I would have had to leave the set.

Gosling appeared on the show in promotion of his new film The Fall Guy, also starring Emily Blunt and potential Bond Aaron Taylor Johnson.
