This month Australian brand bassike launched Uniform, a new capsule aimed at redefining our approach to a daily wardrobe – minimalist and elegantly done staples intended to become the building blocks for a timeless style.

An ethos of simple luxury formed from quality craftsmanship and superior fabrications, bassike has always been a brand that focuses on clothes designed to be more worn than once. Uniform, says Bassike’s co-founder and Creative Director Deborah Sams, takes this philosophy to the next level.

“The concept was to design and create garments for people to invest in and wear with ease,” explains Sams.

Consisting of familiar core items such as crisp cotton poplin shirting, cashmere, merino and twill trousers in muted colour palletes with accents of rich ochres and basil, the uniform concept is to give bassike’s signature elevated treatment to those high rotational items we call on every day. The term itself is also a playful take on the way we rely on regular items to become the base upon which we add a personal flourish to.

“The term is a riff on the literal meaning of the term ‘uniform’ as we intended these pieces to be uncomplicated,” Sams tells ICON. “Polished styles you can reach for every day. These styles have been embedded in our collections since the beginning, but it was important to give them their own name and space, deliberately highlighting and separating these hero items from seasonal products.”

Inspired by Australia’s relatively relaxed lifestyle needs, temperate climate and beach-side culture bassike has been a forerunner of the luxe casual movement for years now. Their philosophy of fuss-free, multifunctional dressing has meant the bassike brand has become synonymous with essential pieces that are season-less in concept.

According to Sams, the Uniform capsule, which is part of the broader Pre Collection 2023, pares this back even further. It was while looking at her own wardrobe that she began to consider potential gaps in the designs, if any, that were practical, functional and could accomodate a diversity of both body type and needs-based dressing.

“[The process] was very instinctive and intuitive,” says Sams.”I thought about my own wardrobe, our current product offering and then was very practical about designing pieces that would serve purpose to the modern customer.

“The capsule is reflective of the brand DNA and the signature silhouettes and fabrications that have contributed to our success. It is about providing styling options and considering different body types, lifestyles and how our customers go about their every day, be it work, leisure or travel.”
