Welcome (back) to the Spiderverse Mr Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino who has just been slated to star and produce in a film for the Sony Spider-Man Universe.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Glover’s film will be about the Hypno-Hustler – a disco music making villain who uses hypnotic technology to rob his audiences.

Sounds groovy and sounds perfect for Glover.

For those who aren’t across the many characters both main and tangental within the Spider-Man universe, the Hypno-Hustler first appeared in issue 24 of Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man back in 1978.

Real name Antoine Desloin, Hypno-Hustler was the frontman for a band The Mercy Killers. According to the team at The Hollywood Reporter, the reason for the character’s transition to the big screen was Glover’s own musical talents that could be tapped for the role. While undeniably cool, Hypno-Hustler was far from a major villain in the comics. Which probably makes him perfect for the film franchise which has already seen plenty of Green Goblin, Doc Oc and other more familiar bad guys.

The role also marks the second appearance of Glover within the Spider-Man franchise. He first made his presence felt back in the 2017 movie Spider-Man: Homecoming as The Prowler. Glover’s name had previously been thrown around as a potential Spider-Man himself back in 2012 when the search was on for an actor to play the hero in The Amazing Spider-Man. This role would ultimately end up going to Andrew Garfield, however.

As of yet, the film still has no official title but apparently they’ve tapped Myles Murphy, son of actor Eddie Murphy, as a writer on the film.
