In a refreshing affirmation of innovation and quality in Australian fashion Jeremy Hershan of Haulier, a Sydney-based label, has emerged as the winner of the prestigious National Designer Award at this year’s PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival, sponsored by David Jones. This accolade, far from being a mere ceremonial nod, is renowned for catapulting promising designers into the limelight, providing them with a springboard for mentorship, industry networking, and crucial exposure.

Haulier’s victory is a testament to its distinctive approach to fashion design, combining functionality with a timeless aesthetic. Specialising in accessories, particularly the famed Utility Tote, the brand has also successfully ventured into gender-neutral apparel. Their focus on craftsmanship and enduring design distinguished them in a competitive field, earning high praise from the panel of industry judges, including Caroline Ralphsmith, CEO of the festival. Ralphsmith highlighted Haulier’s “clear vision and sophisticated approach” as key factors in their decision.

The label’s founder and creative force, Jeremy Hershan, is no stranger to the upper echelons of the fashion world. With a background that includes leading roles at R.M. Williams and participation in The International Woolmark Prize Advisory Council, Hershan’s experience is evident in the brand’s ethos and execution. This award brings with it a significant boost for Haulier, offering a prize pool of $130,000 to further develop and refine the brand.

Other noteworthy designers vying for the top spot included Alix Higgins and Timothy Aquino of Thdr, among others. However, it was Jordan Gogos of Iordanes Spyridon Gogos who earned an Honourable Mention for Sustainability. This accolade acknowledged his commitment to sustainable practices in fashion, a critical and evolving aspect of the industry.
