If you’re a menswear enthusiast who is eager to learn of the outcome of spinning style trends for the impending season/s, Pitti Uomo is a quintessential event you’ll have marked on your calendar, whether attending in person or not. Whilst traditionally an important tradeshow for international buyers, brands, emerging designers and fashion heads, today it has become a pivotal event for the fashion-savvy to see and be seen among the trendy hordes.

For four days, the men’s fashion world will descend upon the Fortezza da Basso in Florence, Italy, where style aficionados and peacocks alike will mingle, network and discover all there is to come in the coming menswear seasons.

The fair, held twice yearly – once in the summer and once in the winter – is now in its 102nd iteration and is centred around the theme ‘Pitti Island‘, a concept which was created to replicate the sensation of an island escape.

“An island that is a temple of nature and humankind. That is Pitti Island,” an Instagram post describes.

“We are projecting ourselves in a piece of land that is not a place of isolation, but of collection. Exotic and yet urban, wild and magical: this is a temple where humans and nature come together as one. Not to divide, but to reflect upon discoveries, explorations, identities and relations. Pitti Island is connected with the whole world in a mutual and constant exchange. Just like answers to elementary questions can be found within the four elements of nature. This summer we are welcoming you to our Island, get ready for it.”

While the current iteration of Pitti Uomo began in 1972, the Italian-inspired dates back to 1951, bringing together Italian brands, tailors and designers for a week of sprezzatura. But in recent years, Pitti Uomo has shone a light on a plethora of international talent, making it a worldly menswear experience. Just this year, the fair will play host to a myriad of global brands such as End Clothing, Saks Fifth, Browns, Kith and Nordstrom to name a few, and Grace Wales Bonner held one of her most important menswear shows at this year’s Pitti Uomo 102.

For those that aren’t able to attend the tradeshow, it’s all about the street fashion that make the rounds feverishly across social media. At Pitti Uomo 102, it was great to see fewer suits and more weather-appropriate dressing (mind you, it’s 35+ degrees in Florence right now). There were plenty of flowing neutrals, linen staples and utilitarian-inspired looks that you can imagine easily joining your clothing repertoire.

Pops of colour are in, as is accessorising to elevate a look: plenty of dad caps, vintage sunglasses and oversized tote bags were key. Sneakers were seen in plenty, paired effortlessly with relaxed tailoring and subtle suiting.
