VENICE: Former Grey’s Anatomy star turned motorsport star Patrick “McDreamy” Dempsey has just reminded everyone why he was such an obsession of mums, young women (and plenty men) back in the early 00s.

Currently in Venice for the launch of his new film Ferrari, which co-stars Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz – Dempsey’s red carpet appearance, a rare occurrence since he left the hit series, became the talk of the event. The 57-year-old actor had aged like a fine wine, a testament to perhaps avoiding the spotlight and actually living a life that makes you happy.

But the real winner was Dempsey’s outfit for the media call: a Brunello Cucinelli chalk stripe suit in the perfect shade of navy blue with gold-toned pinstripes. Beneath it, instead of the usual white shirt Dempsey styled a simple beige knit. Finishing it off was a nifty little TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche RS 2.7. It was a look straight from the classic playbooks of Steve McQueen, a fellow actor, TAG Heuer icon and car enthusiast who made racing a post-movie career.

It was the perfect balance of elegant tailoring and comfortable style and the strongest case for the revival of the pinstripe suit as a menswear power move.

The pinstripe’s sartorial association with “power” is murky at best. A style favoured by the likes of Al Capone to the world of Wall Street where Michael Douglas’ Gordon Gekko, it became a symbol of power via machismo.

Today’s pinstripe offers a different take on the masculine classic, one that looks at it from the perspective of comfort being the ultimate power move. Dempsey’s particular cut, for example, is both relaxed in silhouette but still tailored enough to compliment Dempsey’s body shape and accentuate all the right places ie the shoulders and narrow the waistline.
