Gone are the days when we could convince ourselves that we could happily carry our daily needs around and still be comfortable. Wallets, smart phone, keys, sunglasses – the modern detritus of our effects are not suited to sitting in four pockets around our hips.

Let’s be honest – pockets are for chumps and our female friends have been right all along: a great bag is an essential an asset every man should have. Enter, the new Dior Saddle CD 1947.

History in material form. Image: Dior

Dior’s saddle bag has become the stuff of legend – the kind of accessory that becomes entrenched in a moment in time. Where were you when the newspaper saddle dropped? Or the Daniel Arsham created in collaboration with Dior menswear’s artistic director Kim Jones? The Dior Saddle bag is an anthropology of style.

The latest arrival from the Dior Winter 2022 collection continues Jones’ archeology of Dior’s past, bringing elements of maison’s signature motifs and reinterpreting them to meet the style needs of today. Created using a grained leather in the Dior grey, the name Christian Dior is appears in delicate calligraphy. Underneath, the year 1947 – the year of the first Dior fashion show.

Grey has always been an important colour to the house – not only because it was the founder’s favourite colour but because it was often the colour of the skies at his childhood home in Granville. Today, it marks a simple, minimalistic approach to the iconic silhouette. While historically a women’s bag, the new colourway brings a more masculine finish.

Worn with denim and a t-shirt or something to throw over a suit to put your basic essentials in, there’s a reason why our female peers have been in love the Saddle Bag since it first launched in 1999 during the Spring/Summer 2000 show. We should have been listening to them all along.
