Spider-Man and Mr Zendaya Tom Holland has announced that he is retiring from acting. For a year, any way. So more of a break than officially retiring.

According to an interview the British star gave to Extra, the 27-year-old Holland has confirmed that he will be taking a year off from acting to recuperate and rest after what he described as a “brutal” experience shooting his new Apple TV+ crime thriller, Crowded Room.

“It was a tough time, for sure,” says Holland. “We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before. And then on top of that, being a producer, dealing with the day-to-day problems that come with any film set, just added that extra level of pressure.”

It’s easy to assume that the physicality of his role as Spider-Man would have been the one to make the actor need a little R&R, it’s often overlooked (or unknown) that the emotional stress of roles is often the biggest test.

It could also be true, somewhat. Holland, who recently celebrated his birthday on June 1, has been churning out no less than 19 movies since he had his breakthrough in the Captain America: Civil War back in 2016.

The Crowded Room tells the story about Danny Sullivan (played by Holland) who, in 1979, was is arrested for a shooting he commits in the Rockefeller Centre. The series is based on the non-fiction story The Minds of Billy Milligan who was the first person in the US to be acquitted of a major crime by pleading dissociative identity disorder. It also stars The Dropout’s Amanda Seyfried, Will Chase and Emmy Rossum.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Holland also confessed that the toll shooting the new series had led to what he described as a “bit of a meltdown” in his personal life.“I was seeing myself in [the character], but in my personal life,” said Holland.

“I remember having a bit of a meltdown at home and thinking, like, ‘I’m going to shave my head. I need to shave my head because I need to get rid of this character.’ And, obviously, we were mid-shooting, so I decided not to… It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.”

Holland’s break might be restricted to only a year at most, too. While still to be confirmed, Holland was alleged to have been in talks for a reported six-project Marvel Studios deal.
