To be honest, we expected a weird and whacky name from Elon Musk and Grimes when they announced the birth of their recent baby. However, what we were not expecting was the name ‘X Æ A-12 Musk’, and ever since the announcement, the world wide web has been baffled by its pronunciation. But following a recent Instagram post, it turns out that Musk’s child had to be renamed as the original name did not comply with Californian law.

The law states that numbers nor the ‘Æ’ is permitted to be part of a name, therefore it must be changed. A follower commented on Grimes’ post asking if the name has been changed and she replied “X Æ A-Xii”. Now we assume ‘Æ’ is now simply written as ‘AE’ and the 12 has been switched out using roman numerals – sneaky. According to a recent interview between Elon Musk and Joe Rogan, the name was Grimes’ idea and we have an idea of how to pronounce it.

“She’s great at names,” he said. “It’s just X, the letter X, and then the Æ is pronounced ‘Ash’ and then A-12 is my contribution. Archangel 12, the precursor to the SR-71. Coolest plane ever. It’s true.” He added, “I think it’s better being older and having a kid. I appreciate it more. Babies are awesome.”

So from what we have taken from that, Elon Musk’s baby’s name is pronounced X Ash Archangel 12.

Earlier this month, Grimes attempted to explain the name on Twitter.

I wonder what will be short for X Æ A-Xii – Ash?
