Announced in the early hours of Thursday morning, Amazon founder and the world’s richest man Jeff Bezos announced the split from his wife, after 25 years of marriage. Taking to twitter to break the news, the divorce has sparked mass headlines with everyone asking what will happen to the huge wealth the couple have accumulated.

“We have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends,” they said in the statement, which was posted to Jeff Bezos’ Twitter page. “If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again.”

Currently with an estimated worth of $136.2 billion USD, Jeff Bezos is the richest man in modern history and with 95 percent of his wealth coming from Amazon and wife Mackenzie having also vested interest in the company, the settlement could be the richest in history.

In a report from the ABC, Liat Sadler, a San Francisco matrimonial lawyer says there is two simple ways the way the settlement regarding Amazon could go.  “If she trusts that he would manage Amazon well, either he should pay her for her share of the stock, or they could enter a more complicated agreement where she keeps stock and he keeps voting rights,” she said.

As for their other property, as they live in Washington State, it could mean that the couple will equitably divide other belongings.

Jeff Bezos is also the owner of Washington Post as well as rocket company Blue Origin while Mackenzie is a successful creative writer, winning the American Book Award for her first novel, The Testing of Luther Albright, published in 2005.

Stay tuned for further developments.
