The return of ugg boots as a style statement was not on our bingo card for 2023 but Jonah Hill is making a strong case for their comeback.
The Superbad and Wolf of Wall Street star was spotted cruising the streets of the LA neighbourhood of Brentwood rocking the signature footwear of the early ’00s. Bleached surf hair, Kapital raw denim and a pair of trusty ugg boots – Hill looks happy. And yes, he looks happy in a pair of ugg boots.
Perhaps its nostalgia for simpler times – pre Trump, pre lockdown, pre morons taking over social media companies just to transform them into conspiracy spruiking corners of the worst of humanity. It could also be the rise of cosy-centric style. Goodbye athleisure and hello veg out fashion.
While all fashion is inevitably revived, the thought of ugg boots – once the YTK equivalent of crocs – suddenly appearing on the feet of normally well -shod folks is both surprising and to be expected. The entire genre – right down to the return of low rise pants and even the graphic print jeans as seen on on Hill himself – has seen a resurgence in the younger fashion crowds.
Hill has garnered plenty of praise for the direction of his style evolution. While he’s not attempting to become a style icon (unless he is and we don’t know about it) what makes it so inspiring is just how authentic it is for him.
Thankfully, summer is almost over so we have double the reason to go out and get ourselves a pair of good uggs for a walk down to the pub. Thanks for the inspo.
